TRANSCRIPTION OF DETAILS

The church was opened in 1782 and was, at that time, located on the corner of Common Loan and Castle Street. Common Loan was rebuilt and today is called Canal Street. In later years the church name changed to Canal Street Church and most recently Castlehead Church in 1970. The church provided land for the burial of 140 victims of the 1823 cholera epidemic which hit Paisley and a stone reveals ground containing 20 lairs was purchased by funds raised by voluntary subscription. Paisley's most famous poet, Robert Tannahill, was buried in this churchyard after his burial had been refused by other churches throughout the town because he allegedly took his own Life, drowning in the Candren Burn.

The inscriptions below represent around half of the headstones at the cemetery and many need to be checked for missing details. The following key should be read in conjunction with transcriptions:

# = unable to read letter or number
(?) = unclear but best interpretation
###….### = words or lines unreadable
Inscriptions are listed as spelled on headstones. If a place name is spelled differently from today’s spelling, the modern name will appear in [brackets] to assist in searches. The numbers by each listing are used for our text-photo cross-reference purposes only and do not indicate a plot number or location.
