TRANSCRIPTION OF DETAILS

This cemetery is currently being transcribed and photographed by Happyhaggis. The inscriptions below represent about half of the surviving headstones. Most need to be checked for missing details. The following key should be read in conjunction with transcriptions:

# = unable to read letter or number
(?) = unclear but best interpretation
###….### = words or lines unreadable
Inscriptions are listed as spelled on headstones. If a place name is spelled differently from today’s spelling, the modern name will appear in [brackets] to assist in searches. The numbers by each listing are used for our text-photo cross-reference purposes only and do not indicate a plot number or location.

Lochwinnoch first grew up around a church established here by the monks of Paisley Abbey in the 11th century. A new church was built, possibly on the site of the older one, in 1729. There are graves dating back to the 16th century. When the church was demolished, local weavers insisted the front gable of St. Winnoc's church, known as 'Auld Simon', be preserved. The area around the church was called the Kirktoun.
