Lochwinnoch first grew up around a church established here by the monks of Paisley Abbey in the 11th century. A new church was built, possibly on the site of the older one, in 1729. There are graves dating back to the 16th century. When the church was demolished, local weavers insisted the front gable of St. Winnoc's church, known as 'Auld Simon', be preserved. The area around the church was called the Kirktoun.

Ordained minister of this parish on the 2nd March ## 1815 at the disreption(?) in 1842(?) he abandonded his living and with a large body of adherents formed the Free Church Congregation of Lochwinnoch. "Every one that hath forsaken houses or bretheren or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands for my name's sake shall receive an hundred-fold and shall inherit everlasting life. Matt.19.29" Marjory Barr wife of the Rev. Robert Smith D.D. born 8th May 1801 died 8th May 1881. Neil Montgomery and Robert Bruce Smith grandchildren of the Rev.
