HOW TO SEARCH HAPPYHAGGIS QUICKLY
Feel free to explore the pages of HappyHaggis. If you are having trouble finding something specific, or looking for a specific name, please use the search box at the top of the left-hand index column. This search engine will check www.happyhaggis.co.uk only. Please note, if you are searching two or more words eg. Bill Smith, place the words inside quotation marks eg. "bill smith". Note that some war memorial name lists have first and last names listed while some have initial and surname only.

TRANSCRIPTION OF DETAILS
Inscriptions are listed as per the spelling on headstones. If a place name spelling is different from today’s spelling, the modern name will appear in [brackets] to assist the reseacher. The numbers next to each inscription are used to cross-refer text to photos. They do not relate in any way to the location of the burial plot.

It is unlikely you will find a numerical date on a headstone, but they do exist. If you find a date, for example, 10-3-1901, the date should be read as the 10th March 1901 (day-month-year) and not as a North American style 3rd October 1901 (month-day-year).

Be careful with the wording on headstones. If you find a memorial which says something like "died in his 50th year" this means he hadn't reached 50, but died at 49. Headstones were not used in churchyards until the 17th century.

Details are transcribed as accurately as possible, sometimes with repeat visits to the cemetery to check details. Aged and damaged memorial inscriptions can sometimes be difficult to read, and details are always based on the transcribers best possible interpretation. Where there is obvious doubt, the following codes have been used:

# = unable to read letter or number
(?) = unclear but best logical interpretation
###….### = words or lines unreadable

The cemetery was formed 1719-20, the first burial dates from 1719, and the last 1903. Formerly known as North-West Parish Kirk and St. David's, the church was built in 1824. The stones are either fixed to the boundary wall or laid flat on the ground and commemorate many of the merchants who lived and worked in this area at that time. This was the prosperous West End of Glasgow and the place to be buried in Georgian times. The HappyHaggis transcription of this cemetery was made in 2008/2009. We have transcribed the headstones which could be read, and did not remove moss off these ancient headstones. As a result the transcription made is not complete. A check of details is scheduled to be carried out during spring/summer 2010. Although there are many uncertain texts, we thought it best to offer what we had at the moment, with the plan to improve them later in 2010.

0209 To the glory of God and in memory of Sir John A. Macdonald 1815-1891. Canada's first prime minister, born in Ramshorn Parish, emigrated with his family to Kingston, Upper Canada, in 1820. A successful lawyer, he was elected to the provincial legislature in 1844 and became leader of the Conservative party. He played a leading role in the effort to achieve a federal union of Britain's North American colonies which resulted in the formation of the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867. Macdonald served as prime minister 1867-73 and 1878-91, and under his administration large territories were added to Canada, a transcontinental railway built and settlement of the West encouraged. At his death Canada's autonomy, based on rapid economic development and a close British-Canadian relationship, was assured. Archaeological and Historic Sites Board of Ontario.
