TRANSCRIPTION OF DETAILS

It os not known when this site first became a cemetery. It is however a very old graveyard with the earliest existing gravestone dating back to the 18th century. Stories are told of grave robbers, ghosts, highwaymen, 'horrid scenes' and dangers to health caused by the chronic overcrowding in the cemetery. Following protests concerning conditions in the cemetery, it was closed. The last burials took place in 1875.

The following key should be read in conjunction with transcriptions:

# = unable to read letter or number
(?) = unclear but best interpretation
###….### = words or lines unreadable
Inscriptions are listed as spelled on headstones. Abbreviated names are listed in full to aid in web-based name searches.
