IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get everyJames and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The happyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

THE CHOLERA [01] This disease still maintains its hold in Glasgow. The cases are becoming more numerous than formerly, and diarrhoea is very prevalent. It still lingers at Wishaw and other mining villages. Numerous cases are also reported from Greenock, and a few from Alexandria in Dumbartonshire. In Charlston, a large suburb to the south of Paisley, a good deal of excitement and alarm prevail in consequence of several cases of cholera having occurred there within the last day or two.

STATISTICS OF DRUNKENNESS IN GLASGOW [01] A return, prepared by Mr Smart, Superintendent of Police of Glasgow, shows that the number of persons taken into custody by the Glasgow police, from three o'clock morning of each Sunday till ten o'clock a.m. of each following Monday, charged with being drunk and incapable, drunk and disorderly, and drunk and committing assaults, was in June 1852, 206; in June 1853, 172; and in June 1843, 70. The Mail, however, publishes a statement, the inference from which is that drunkenness of late is largely on the increase.

DEATH OF PROFESSOR P WILSON, RECTOR OF TAIN ACADEMY [01] It is with the deepest regret that we make this melancholy announcement. Mr Wilson was a native of Roxburghshire, and studied at St Andrews, where he was a contemporary of Dr. Duff, now the world-renowned missionary. He afterwards studied theology at Glasgow under Dr Macgill. By his death the profession has lost one of its brightest ornaments, and the public one of its most useful and influential servants. The positions he filled as rector of the Inverness Academy, Professor in the Andersonian University, Glasgow, and lastly Rector of Tain Academy, he occupied with the highest honour to himself and entire satisfaction to the public. - Inverness Advertiser.

THE CHOLERA [01] We regret at announce that cholera has again made its appearance in Edinburgh. Three cases have been reported from the Canongate, two of which have proved fatal. One was reported yesterday to the authorities of St Cuthbert's parish - that of a woman residing at Fountainbridge; she died last night after four hour's illness. A fatal case also occurred on Monday in the South Bridge. from Leith we learn that there have been two cases of imported cholera - one from London, and the other from Limekilns, near Alloa. That from London was a person who was attacked on board the steamer. In Glasgow the number of cases remains about the average of the last few weeks, while in Paisley and Newmilns, near Kilmarnock, several new cases have been reported. As to Alloa, the Alloa Advertiser says:- "While there has been as yet no decided case of cholera in Alloa, scarcely a town or village in the neighbourhood has escaped the visitation of the pestilence. There have been in the aggregate a considerable number of cases throughout the country, but the mortality has not been great. In the hamlet of March Glen alone, however, near Tillicoultry, there have been either four of five deaths. In Limekilns, near Dunfermline, the disease is seriously prevalent."

DISTRESSING GUN ACCIDENT [01] On Thursday about two o'clock a most distressing accident occurred on the Roseneath hills, near Cove, a few miles beyond Kilcreggan. It appears that Mr Cochran, grain-merchant, Glasgow, had accompanied a party to the moors, for the purpose of witnessing the fashionable sport of grouse-shooting. He was accompanied by Mr Morrison, a gentleman recently returned from New Orleans who though not a sportsman was anxious to try his hand at bringing down a bird. The dog pointed, the bird rose, and Mr Morrison levelled his fowling-piece, but, lamentable to relate, in quickly following the bird in a sudden wheel which it made, he fired, when his friend Mr Cochran, exclaiming "I am shot!" instantly fell to the ground. Mr Morrison, utterly horror-stricken, rushed forward and caught him in his arms, but the unfortunate gentleman had only time to exclaim "what will my poor wife and children do?" and instantly expired. The contents of the gun had lodged right in his heart. Mr Cochran had gone down the Clyde to recruit himself after a slight attack of the prevailing distemper and has left a widow and three children.
