IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get everyJames and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The happyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

BOY KILLED [02] On Tuesday afternoon, a boy about four years of age, named Michael McMahon, accidentally met his death in the following melancholy manner. It seems that having climbed to the top of the logs of wood lying in a timber yard in Hunter Street, for the purpose of amusing himself, one of them lurched over, and falling on him crushed him so severely that he almost instantaneously expired.

SEVERE ACCIDENT [02] Yesterday afternoon a carter named James brown, who bears a character much above the average of his class, met with a severe accident, which it is feared will terminate fatally. He was carrying ashore a box of herrings from the Inverary Castle, and falling from the plank, struck his head on the bulwark of the vessel, the box falling upon him at the same time with such violence, that his skull was fractured and his face disfigured almost beyond recognition.

DEATH OF MR ROBERT HOPE, FENTON BARNS [abbreviated][02] We regret to record the death, though at an advanced age, of Mr Robert Hope, for upwards of half a century tenant of the farm of Fenton Barns, East Lothian, and who in the days of his vigour held a prominent position in connection with Scottish agriculture...succeeded his father in the same farm... – The Scotsman.

FATAL ACCIDENT [02] On Monday week, an accident of a fatal nature occurred on board the ship Aberfoyle, as she was being tugged down the Clyde. When opposite Renfrew, one of the apprentices, James Stevenson Anderson, belonging to Rothesay, missed his footing as he was passing the hatchway and fell into the hold. Having been brought here, it was deemed necessary that he should be removed to the Infirmary, where it was ascertained that the patient had sustained an extensive fracture of the skull. The lad rallied somewhat after admission, but inflammation of the brain having supervened, he gradually sunk, and died on Sabbath morning, six days after receipt of the injury. – Greenock Advertiser.

MELANCHOLY AND FATAL OCCURRENCE [abbreviated][02] On the morning of Sabbath last, the wife of Mr William Tudhope, merchant, Coatbridge, had occasion to use vitrol for purposes connected with her household affairs, but by some incaution or neglect the cup which contained the burning liquid happened to fall within the reach of her child...a little boy of three years...who swallowed the contents...the boy expired the following day. This circumstance is rendered doubly afflicting from the painful fact that, a few years ago, another favourite child, of the same parents, had two teaspoons of vitrol administered by the hand of the same fond but mistaken mother, instead of hive water, the consequences of which were a like fatal result.

FATAL ACCIDENT [02] On Friday last, while a breaksman on the Bo’ness and Slamannan Railway, named Robert Heddley, was sitting or standing between two trucks of a goods’ train which was in motion, by some accident he fell down between them, and the whole of the remainder of the train, consisting of three carriages and the engine, passed over his thighs, separating his legs from his body. The train was immediately stopped and the unfortunate man conveyed to Bo’ness, where he expired in a few hours afterwards. The accident took place about a quarter of a mile from the junction of the Bo’ness branch with the Edinburgh and Glasgow line, near Myrehead, in the parish of Muiravonside. We understand the young man was unmarried and had been but a short time in the company’s service/ - Falkirk Herald.

MELANCHOLY EFFECTS OF DISSIPATION [abbreviated][02] On Sunday morning some excitement prevailed in Leith in consequence of a report that a young man was lying dead on board of one of the steamers, that another had fallen into the harbour, and that a third was dangerously ill, through the excessive use of ardent spirits. It appears that at an early hour of the morning George Adams, Thomas Smith and Alexander Smith, and William McKay, four men belonging to the port, obtained from a cask nearly a large pail full of liquor, known by a certain class as “bulk”, which is putting hot water into an empty whisky-cask and shaking and rolling it about for a short time till the spirits are extracted from the staves.... George Adams left his companions and went on board of the steam boat Xantho, where shortly afterwards he was found dead. Thomas Smith came ashore...being in a state of insensibility...was taken to the Police Station. Alexander Smith, in attempting to get ashore, fell into the harbour...assistance being soon procured...was conveyed home... – Courant.
