IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get every James and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The HappyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

BOY DROWNED [02] On Saturday afternoon, a boy, 14 years of age, named William Spiers, was found drowned in a hot water pond in the vicinity of Mr Dixon’s iron works, situated at the extremity of Crown Street. It is conjectured that the unfortunate deceased had been seized with cramp while bathing. The body was claimed by a brother who resides in Clyde Street, Calton. Mr Kirkwood, the Inspector of Govan parish, granted a coffin and ground for the internment of the deceased.

FATAL ACCIDENT [02] About four o’clock on Saturday afternoon, while a labourer named James lauder, was engaged, on the paddle-box of the steamer Lyra, fastening the bow-line of the Princess Royal steamer, which was preparing to leave the harbour, he unfortunately fell through the paddle-box, which was open at the time, into the water. The unfortunate man never rose to the surface in life, and it is conjectured he must have been killed in his descent through the paddle-wheel. His head was very much cut. The deceased was married, was about 23 years of age, and was always a sober, industrious man. We believe no blame is attached to any of the persons connected with the Lyra.

FATAL ACCIDENT [02] On Wednesday night, about six o’clock, a lad of seventeen years of age, named Peter Buchan, while returning home from his work along with some other labourers, and passing along Fountainbridge in the middle of the road, was suddenly driven over by a van and killed on the spot. The driver instantly made off as fast as he could. – Scotsman.

MELANCHOLY OCCURRENCE IN FIFE [02] About the end of last week, William Shepherd, sheriff-officer, having been sent from Cupar to largo to execute a summons, did not return, nor was anything heard of him up till Wednesday morning, when the doubts entertained by his friends were removed by the melancholy intelligence that his body had been found about Keil’s Den, near Largo. He was an old man, and has acted as a sheriff-officer since August 1824. He has left a widow to deplore his loss. We may add as somewhat remarkable, that this is the third sheriff-officer belonging to Cupar who has been found dead under much the same circumstances within these few years. – Fife Herald.

At the first view, circumstances looked rather suspicious, and Robertson was taken into custody, and the case reported to the Sheriff. A post mortem examination was accordingly made, which showed that death was the result of apoplexy. The husband was, of course, liberated. It appears that the deceased was a poor drunken wretch, who, on Friday, sold the very bed on which she had lain, and drunk herself to death with the proceeds.

FATAL ACCIDENT [02] We regret to learn that on Tuesday last, a labouring man met with an accident at the Dalry station of the Glasgow and South-Western Railway, which unfortunately proved fatal. We understand his name was John McKail, and was engaged upon the line as surfaceman, but having found his way into the station while on one of the luggage trains was shunting wagons there, he leaped upon the buffers of the engine and fell. GREENOCK [02] On Tuesday the body of a young man named William Pugsley, aged twenty, one of the boatmen frequenting the quays, was found floating in the river, at the back of the Steamboat Quay. He had left his father’s house in Saturday night in some displeasure, muttering that he would drown himself and though he did not return, as similar language was not unfrequently used by him, and he was in the habit of leading a rather irregular life, his absence created no uneasiness, till the finding of his body raised the conjecture that the unfortunate youth had succeeded in carrying into effect his rash purpose. – Greenock Advertiser.
