IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get every James and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The HappyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

STEWARTON – SUICIDE [02] On Tuesday last, Charles Boyd Currie, a grocer and spirit-dealer, residing here, committed suicide by swallowing a quantity of laudanum. He was taking a dram in company with some of his neighbours, and was in good spirits, on the previous evening, and went to bed, about two o’clock, perfectly sober. On his servant going to arouse him in the morning, she observed something unusual in his appearance, and gave the alarm. Dr Caskie was soon in attendance, and did everything that medical skill could suggest, but he continued gradually to sink, and died about noon. No cause can be assigned for this rash act. Deceased was a sober, industrious man, and his untimely end has cast a gloom over the neighbourhood in which he resided. He has left a widow and three young children. – Kilmarnock Journal.

MAN KILLED [02] On Friday se’nnight Richard Dick, one of the colliers employed in Bonnington Coal Pit, was unfortunately caught betwixt the cage and the roof, and instantly bruised to death. The fatal result is said to have been owing to some dispute with another worker regarding priority in sending up their respective hutches. Dick was leaning over his on the cage when the engine was put in motion, and being caught by the head, he was bruised instantly to death. He was about to have been married to a young woman in this town, and the bans of this intended union had been proclaimed on the Sabbath preceding. – Kilmarnock Journal.

FATAL ACCIDENT [02] On Tuesday forenoon, a fatal accident happened to Robert Hall, employed as a wright in Mr Wallace’s coach-work. He was engaged with some others in raising a large piece of timber by means of tackle for the purpose, but when at the proper height, and everything believed to be secure, it suddenly lost the equilibrium, and swung half round, descending with great violence on the head of the unfortunate Hall, who was struck dead upon the spot. It was found his skull was dreadfully fractured. One of his fellowworkmen had a very narrow escape from the same fate. The latter, while the beam was “canting”, had just stepped from beneath it, to obtain a prop to add to it’s security, and thereby saved his life by almost a hair’s breadth. Hall was a widower, and has left some family.

LAMENTABLE OCCURRENCE [02] About seven o’clock on Thursday night, as several persons were walking along the banks of the Paisley Canal, they observed in the vicinity of Shields Bridge, a man leap head foremost into the water. They immediately ran to give assistance, and by the aid of a walking stick were enabled to draw the poor man out of the water. When rescued, the unfortunate individual seemed to be labouring under a convulsive or epileptic fit, in which he continued for some time. He was taken to the Southern Police Office, and Dr. McAuslane of Nicolson Street sent for, under whose attention he ultimately rallied. The poor man afterwards went into several fits in the Post Office. He gave his name as John Cross Miller, and stated that he had been an inmate of the Barony Poor-house, from which he had been recently discharged. He is, we understand, a native of Crossmyloof. It is believed that destitution may have produced the fits under which the unfortunate man was labouring.
