IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get every James and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The HappyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

FATAL ACCIDENT [abbreviated][02] We regret to state that a man, named Robert Tays, who had been employed as one of the pile-drivers at the Victoria Bridge, was accidentally drowned there on the morning of Friday last. In consequence of the river being in heavy flood, the work in progress at the bridge was entirely suspended, but the deceased proceeded, of his own accord, accompanied by some others, to secure with ropes a piling machine, which stood in the centre of the river, and which they believed to be in danger of being swept away. To reach this spot, Tays stepped from one pile-head to another, and had just reached that last when his foot slipped, and he fell into the torrent... he eventually sank and was drowned...has left a young family to lament his loss.

DREADFUL AND FATAL OCCURRENCE [abbreviated][02] On Sunday morning last, a young man, named Thomas Neilson, about 16 years of age, was deprived of life in Dumfries in an awful manner. He resided with his uncle, Mr William Dickie, spirit dealer, English Street, Dumfries, and had been apprenticed to a baker, but not liking the business had left recently his employment... he slept in the garret floor of the house, which is three stories high... there is a skylight window which is not large and would take some exertion for a person to get through to the roof... about nine o’clock on Sunday morning the body of a man was seen lying in the adjoining slate-yard and was discovered to be that if the same man... had nothing upon him but his night shirt and a cap.... evidently fallen from the roof, his head had come in contact with a large slate and his skull was dreadfully fractured. The most probable cause is that he must have got out on the roof, and fallen therefrom in a state of somnambulism, to which he is stated to have been occasionally subject for some time past. – Dumfries Courier.

MELANCHOLY OCCURRENCE [02] Shortly after ten o’clock on Friday forenoon, a child was killed by one of Menzies’ omnibuses in Adelphi Street, Gorbals. The child was about three years of age, her name was Susan Hannah, and she resided with her father, a milk dealer in St Ninian Street. It appears she was playing on the street when the occurrence took place, but nobody, so far as we have heard, witnessed the manner in which she met her death. All that is known is that one of the wheels of the omnibus passed over her body and killed her on the spot. The driver, a man named John Fairgrieve, was taken into custody, and the case reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

SUICIDE [02] About ten o’clock last night, a whip-maker, named James Ross, residing in Bell Street, was found suspended by the neck from a clothes’ line in his own house. The deceased wife had repeatedly during the evening attempted to gain admission to the house, but it was not until she had the lock of the door picked that an entrance was affected, when she found the unfortunate deceased as started. SUDDEN DEATH [02] On Wednesday last, an alarmingly sudden death occurred at Dreghorn. James Howat, collier, had gone out, about twelve o’clock in the day, with his rod, to amuse himself by fishing in the Annick river, which passes at no great distance. About eight o’clock in the evening, he was found lying on the roadside, near the wood on this side of the village, by Mr McGavin, the parochial teacher, and his son. At first they supposed that Howat was the worse of liquor, but perceiving, on examination, that this was not the case, and that he was evidently ill, they humanely had him conveyed to his house, and procured a surgeon immediately. All assistance was, however, ineffectual. He never recovered the power of speech, and died a few hours after. Howat was a married man, pretty well advanced in years, and has left a large family. – Kilmarnock Journal.

BOY DROWNED [02] On Monday night, the body of a boy, named John Steel, aged eight years, was found dead in a pond at Dunchattan House, Duke Street. It is supposed he must have accidentally fallen in while playing about as his residence is quite convenient. The body was recovered to the sorrowing parents.

DEATH OF A VETERAN [02] In our obituary of Friday week, we recorded the death of Mr Hugh McComb, sen. Warper. The deceased, embued with the military spirit prevailing among the young men at the beginning of the present century, entered the 71st Regiment, of Glasgow Light Infantry, at that time commanded by Lieut-Colonel Cadogan, who afterwards fell at Vittoria, and to whose memory a splendid monument is erected in our Cathedral, and was present with the regiment in no less that 18 engagements, besides skirmishes &c. At the late distribution of the war medals the deceased received one with 10 clasps attached to it – each clasp having engraved on it the name of a battle, and are as follows:- Roleia, Vimiera, Corunna, Fuentes D’Onor, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes and Toulouse. He was also with the regiment in the expedition to Walcheren. At the short peace in 1814, when Napolean was sent to Elba, he received his dischange with a pension, and on his return to his native city he entered into more peaceful pursuits, at which he continued till a short time previous to his death. In 1826 he wrote a sketch of his military life, under the title of “Vicissitudes of a Scottish Soldier”, and in which was depicted many a thrilling incident of the Peninsular War. The sketch was published by one of the most eminent of our London publishers. The deceased was much respected in private life by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance.
