We regret to learn that a fatal accident occurred yesterday morning at the works of Sheriff & Anderson,
iron founders, London Street...four workmen had been taking loam casting out of the pit... the crane
which supported the mass, four tons in weight, was put on quick motion instead of slow motion... the
bank began to give way... the poor fellow was frightfully mangled...the name of the deceased was Duncan
Carsewell; he was in the prime of life and unmarried.
DISTRESSING OCCURRENCE IN SHETLAND [abbreviated][02]
We regret to learn by a letter addressed to Messrs. Corbett & Co., of this city from Barravoe, Shetland,
dated the 12th current, that during the gale on the 15th July preceding a boat’s crew of six men, while
engaged in fishing, perished off Northmavine, in that island. With one exception all the men have left
families and dependants in a state of destitution, and only one of the sufferers was a subscriber – and that
for the first time – to the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners’ Benevolent Society Fund. Alexander
Lawrenson the skipper of the boat has left a widow with eight children, six of the oldest females in poor
circumstances; Robert Blance senr., a helpless widow and five children in a very destitute state; Robert
Blance junr., a widow and child for the second time, (she having lost her first husband in the gale on
1832), leaving also an aged parent in poor circumstances; Magnus Henderson, a widow and children not
so destitute; Thomas Lawrenson, unmarried, but the only support for several years past of helpless parents
now in destitution; Peter Blance, unmarried but the only support of aged parents now thrown destitute...
DEATH BY FALLING OVER A PRECIPICE [abbreviated][02]
A man named James Nicholl, a cooper, betwixt 40 and 50 years of age, lost his life in a very sudden and
awful manner on Thursday last, in the parish of Cannonby. The unfortunate man lived at Limycleuch, and
was in the habit of working occasionally in the garden attached to the Cross-keys Inn, in the same
parish... the landlord spoke to him about 5 in the afternoon, when it was supposed he went away home.
Next morning a brother of the deceased called at the Inn, and stated that James had not returned home on
the preceding evening... body found lying in the river Esk at a place called Priorspool, whence it was
removed in a cart to Limycleuch. It appears that the garden is situated near the top of a precipitous bank
about 60 feet high, below which the Esk flows... Nicholl was an unmarried man. – Dumfries Courier.
MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT FROM A BOAT [02]
On Wednesday last, a man named Robert Menzies, belonging to Ayr, was accidentally drowned while
fishing from his boat for mackerel in the Bay off Greenan Castle. It commenced to blow rather severely,
and he was in the act of taking in a reef of his sail when the boom struck him and carried him overboard.
His son, a young lad, who was with him could render no assistance, and there being a considerable swell
at the time, his own efforts to save himself were vain. His body has not yet been recovered. The deceased
wore at the time of the accident a pair of moleskin trousers, a blue vest, blue shirt and a silver watch. –
Ayr Observer.
FATAL OCCURENCE AT DUNDEE [abbreviated][02]
Between 10 and 11 o’clock on Saturday night, Thomas Galloway, an old sailor belonging to Dundee, and
John G Ramsay, a young lad of fifteen years old, having left the South Ferry in a boat, and having another
boat in tow, in order to bring her up to Dundee... observed the steam-ship London bearing down in the
direction where they were... they called... a collision took place and both of the small boats were sunk.
Ramsay got hold of some oars and kept himself afloat, but Galloway could not be found. The next
morning (Sunday), while the schooner Queen was on her passage up the river, the men found a boat
bottom upwards and found the body hanging on by one of the ropes... – Dundee Advertiser.
MAN DROWNED [02]
On Sunday morning, the body of a man named John Connell, aged forty-eight years, was found in the
Water of Leith, near Mossy Mill, Colinton. It is believed that the deceased, who left Juniper Green the
previous evening at nine o’clock, had fallen into the stream while crossing a foot bridge a few yards
above where he was found, and which was his nearest way to Swanston, where he resided, and where he
was employed as a stone-dyker. The evening was very wet and dark, and the bridge very narrow, while
the unfortunate man had been drinking before setting out on his homeward journey. – Scotsman.
