IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get every James and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The HappyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

DEATH OF SIR JAMES GIBSON-CRAIG [abbreviated] – We regret to announce the death of Sir James Gibson Craig, Bart., of Riccarton and Ingliston... The malady took such an alarming form on Friday that it was deemed advisable in that day to employ the electric telegraph to summon his eldest son, the Member for the City, from his duties in Parliament... The Family of Gibson of Durie was none of the least famous in the judicial annals even of a country like Scotland... Sir Alexander Gibson, the first Knight Baronet, but not the first eminent lawyer of the race, was Lord President of the Court of Session in the reign of King James VI. He married the daughter of the most distinguished jurist of that age, Sir Thomas Craig of Riccarton, the accomplished author of the treatise “De Jure Feudali”. The eldest son of this marriage, Sir Alexander Gibson, was that Lord Durie whose forcible abduction from Leith Links is commemorated in one of the most spirited ballads of the “Border Minstrelsy”. The second son, John – a soldier, who fought for the King at Worcester – married a daughter of the house of Kinnoull, by whom he had a son, Sir Alexander Gibson, one of the Clerks of Session, and Clerk to the Privy Council. The second son of this gentleman, Alexander Gibson of Durie, was also a Clerk of Session. His son John married a grand-daughter of the noble house of Hyndford, by whom he had two daughters and three sons. From Alexander the eldest is descended the knightly house of Gibson-Carmichael of Skirling. The second son, William, a merchant in Edinburgh, who lived to the year 1807, married Mary-Cecilia, a daughter of James Balfour Esq., of Pilrig, by whom he had ten children, nine sons and a daughter.

The Second son, James Gibson, afterwards, Sir James Gibson-Craig, was born at Edinburgh – we believe in the Lawnmarket – on the 11th of October 1765... in the autumn of 1796 he married Anne, daughter of J Thomson Esq. of this city, by whom he had issue two sons and seven daughters. The eldest son – now Sir William Gibson-Craig, Bart. – was born in 1797 and called to the Scotch bar in 1820... In the year 1823 the late baronet added the surname of Craig to his paternal name of Gibson, on succeeding to the estate of Riccarton, in virtue of the entail of Robert Craig Esq., advocate, one of the Judges of the Commissary Court and the lineal descendant of the great feudal lawyer, Sir Thomas Craig, whose eldest daughter, as we have seen, was married to Sir Alexander Gibson of Durie in the end of the sixteenth century... - Courant

DEATH FROM NIGHT EXPOSURE [abbreviated][02] – Between the hours of six and seven o’clock on Saturday morning, a man was found lying about the middle of the King’s Park, Glasgow Green, in a state of insensibility...the belief that the man had been drinking all night, and having laid himself down on the Green, insensibility had been produced by exposure to the night air. On being searched, a marriage-line was found in his possession, with the name “John Newman” married at Dalry in 1847. The unfortunate individual never spoke and died in the course of the same afternoon. Deceased appeared to be about 40 years of age, and had the appearance of a railway labourer. The body still remains in the receiving house unclaimed.

SUDDEN DEATH [02] – About twelve o’clock on Saturday, a man named Charles Carmichael, a grain carrier at the Broomielaw, was observed to drop down at the foot of Dixon Street, Great Clyde Street. The watchman on the station, who observed the occurrence, had the man immediately carried into the sheds at the Customs House Quay, where it was found that life had fled. Carmichael, it appeared from the statement of the person with whom he had lodged, had been drinking pretty hard of late, and for two days previous to his death had taken no nourishment. Death was, therefore, no doubt the result of intemperance. Deceased was about 70 years of age.

FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT – On Tuesday forenoon a melancholy event occurred on the Newcastle and Berwick Railway at Windmill Hill, about four miles south of this town. A long line of empty trucks were returning northwards, and the party in charge of it having run short of coke, proposed drawing up at the place named, for the purpose of procuring a supply. With this in view they shut off the steam, and before the train came to a stand, the fireman, Philip Lawson, descended between the engine and the trucks for the purpose of disconnecting them by unhooking the chain. In doing this he fell before the wheels of the trucks which going over his head crushed him to death. – Berwick Advertiser.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT DUNLOP [abbreviated] – While the kirk officer of the parish of Dunlop, James Anderson, 78 years of age, was proceeding to ring the evening bell at 9 o’clock (in absence of his son, who was wont to do the task for him, but who had proceeded that day to Glasgow on business), he thought the work would be easier done by going nearer the bell. The man fell through a hatch... and was precipitated to the floor beneath. The bell not having been rung, the long absence roused the fears of his family... he was found and removed but expired the next day. He was a worthy type of the old school and had gone out and in the parish church as its officer for more than half a century. – Ayr Observer.

BODY WASHED ASHORE AT BALLANTRAE [abbreviated] – On Sabbath week, about mid-day, the body of Captain McLinty, of the Water Nymph, wrecked on Dowman Point on the 7th ultimo was cast upon the rocks so as to be reached by two men who were on the spot... – Ayr Observer.

MAN FOUND DEAD – CULPABLE HOMICIDE [abbreviated] – Upon Monday morning last, William Campbell, a miner at Grasswater, between Cumnock and Muirkirk, was found dead near that place. He is believed to have been murdered by an Irish labourer with whom he was drinking pretty freely on the previous night... Campbell was a much stouter man than his opponent... Ayr Advertiser.

FOUND DROWNED – At an early hour this (Thursday) morning, a young man of the age of eighteen or nineteen apparently, was found lying in Kilmarnock Water, in the vicinity of Borland Bridge.. He was quite dead, and had evidently lain in the water for some hours. It is a matter of conjecture whether the unfortunate youth had gone into the water accidently, or by his own suicidal act. The latter is most likely to have been the case, as the water, at the part of the stream where he was discovered, had scarcely depth enough to cover his body. He was seen on the previous day in a state of intoxication, first in Kilmarnock, and subsequently on the Glasgow Road. The body has not yet been identified, but he is supposed to be one William Boyd, belonging to Kirkmichael, and a slater to trade. – Kilmarnock Journal.
