IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get every James and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The HappyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

DEATH BY DROWNING [abbreviated] – On Friday, about noon, a young man named Edward Hogg, a printer, residing at Stockbridge, while walking with two companions who were strangers to the town along the Queen’s Drive, proposed that they should have a bath in Dunsapie Loch. This being agreed upon, Hogg, who was confident of his swimming powers, jumped into the loch at the sluices at the east end, but the others went into more shallow water a little way off. The former had scarcely been a minute in the water when he was seized with cramp. He shouted to his friends for assistance and almost instantly sank. They not knowing the depth of the loch could not render timeous aid, and the body remained about fifty minutes in the water, when a corporal of the Sappers and Miners and one of the park rangers dragged it out. The corpse was then conveyed in a cart to his father’s residence. – Scottish Press.

AWFULLY SUDDEN DEATH – A striking and alarming instance of the uncertainty of life was witnessed in this place on Sabbath last. Mr William Findlay, one of our Burgh Officers, while attending public worship in the King Street United Presbyterian Church, was observed to fall forward in his seat, to all appearance in an insensible state. The excitement this produced in those around him soon drew the eyes of the whole congregation to that portion of the area of the church where Mr Findlay sat, and the preacher pausing in his discourse, gave instructions to remove him to the vestry. This was done with as little delay as possible. On the arrival of Dr. Paxton, he found that life was extinct. This intelligence was conveyed to the Rev. Mr. Symington, the pastor, who did not fail, in the concluding service of the day, to draw, with appropriate fervour and feeling, the attention of his hearers to this striking proof of the frail tenure of existence here. – Kilmarnock Journal.

DEATH OF LORD COREHOUSE [abbreviated] – We regret to announce the death of George Cranstoun Esq., of Corehouse, late one of the Judges of the Court of Session, who died at Corehouse on the afternoon of Wednesday last. This very eminent man was the second son of the Hon. George Cranstoun, a younger son of James, sixth Baron Cranstoun of Crailing... – Scottish Press.

SUDDEN DEATH OF A CHARACTER [abbreviated][02] – On Friday morning about five o’clock, as one of the night guardians was going the round of the closes on his beat, he found the dead body of James Forsyth, well known by the soubriquet of “Wee Jamie” lying on the lower steps of a stair in Craig’s Court, 95 Argyll Street. On various accounts Jamie has long been considered one of the “characters” of this city... The body, after an examination at the Central Police Office, was conveyed to his residence in Old Wynd, where he stayed with a sister, who earns a precarious livelihood by working at book-folding. His remains will be buried at the expense of the Parochial Board.

DEATH BY DROWNING [02] – A melancholy accident, which resulted in the death of a young man, named William Hamilton, belonging to Stonehouse, occurred on the evening of Friday last, at the spring boards, near Rutherglen Bridge. It appears that the deceased went into the Clyde at the above place, for the purpose of bathing. He had not been many minutes in the water when he was heard shrieking for assistance; but although his cries were heard by hundreds who were looking on at the time, no one had sufficient courage to venture in to his aid, and the unfortunate youth, who appeared to have been suddenly seized by cramp, sunk, after a few ineffectual struggles, never to rise again in life. Boats and grappling-irons were procured immediately, but it was not till nearly three hours afterwards that the body was recovered. Deceased was about 21 years of age, and was claimed by his relatives on Saturday.

She shook hands with her, saying she would see her again, but had only proceeded a few paces from the door when she complained of faintness, and was about entering an adjoining house when she dropped or rather crouched down. ANTIQUARIAN – A few years ago, while a grave was being dug within the precincts of the old church of Creich, a stone was raised which had covered an ancient burial vault. This had probably been situated in the aisle of the Catholic Chapel, which the old church had once been. On the face of the stone two figures were seen carved, one of a knight in armour, and the other of a lady. The only inscription was two lines on the side running lengthways; these could not be deciphered, the stone was again covered up with turf, and has since lain undisturbed. On the Fast-day, last week, some scientific gentlemen from Cupar, who happened to be in the vicinity, and who wished to give their secular studies a grave cast, went to the spot and soon made out the inscription. It ran thus:-
“Hie jacet David Berclay de Lutre, dus de Priagyl, qhi obit die meais ano dni MCCCC”
“Hie jacet Helena de Dougla, uxor predict, qui obit, xxxix.
Die meais Januaril, ano dai MCCCCXXI.”
The stone seems to have been erected after the death of the second person mentioned, and the exact date of the death of David Berclay had been forgotten; bit if his wife had been living she could have told the blessed date.
    The rendering is as follows:-
“Here lies David Berclay of Luthrie, Lord of Preagyl, who died A.D. 1400.
“Here lies Helen de Douglas, wife of the foresaid, who died 29th January A.D. 1421..”
This memorial of an age upwards of 400 years bygone, is certainly interesting from its antiquity, if not from its intrinsic worth, but perhaps it may supply a link to the earlier history of some of our older families. It may be mentioned, the word rendered “Lutre” was at first made out to be “Mire”. The latter reading was favoured by the circumstance that some of the lands in the vicinity had been so named. But the former was, after a minute and careful inspection, decidedly considered to be the true rendering. – Fife Herald.

LOSS OF LIFE BY LIGHTENING [02] – On Wednesday afternoon, about five o’clock, serious accidents took place in the neighbourhood of Kilbarchan, during the thunder storm, the result of which has been the death of a respectable person named Thomas Hunter, a grocer and weaver’s agent in Kilbarchan, the injury of two male servants, belonging to the farms of Fulton and Raimhill, and the loss of a valuable cow. Mr Hunter was struck on the head, went through his hat, and passed directly down his body, splitting his clothing into fragments, even his shoes, each of which were found cut in two... he has left a widow and four children.

FATAL ACCIDENTS [abbreviated][01] – On Saturday morning, between eight and nine o’clock, a young man, named Spence Greig, fireman in the employment of the North British Railway Company lost his life... it would appear that it is a practice with some of the engine drivers and firemen, while waiting at the coal lays on the line, to take a gun with them to have a shot at the birds... while Grieg was sweeping the tender, the gun exploded, and the charge entered his groin... he bled to death. On Friday morning, about four o’clock, a young man named Robert Airley, in the employment of Mr Kilpatrick, farmer, Coats, in the neighbourhood of Penicuik, left the farm steading in charge of a herd of cattle... the unfortunate man was discovered about seven o’clock, in the field, lying upon the ground, with a young bull standing quietly over him... he only survived till about nine o’clock. Several ribs in his body had been fractured and his heart had sustained severe injury from a bruise. On Saturday morning, about three o’clock, a person passing the upper stone bridge near Leith Mills, observed some one struggling in the stream below. He immediately gave the alarm and the body was got on shore. It proved to be one of the soldiers belonging to the Artillery. Whether he had thrown himself over the bridge, or by some means overbalanced himself and fallen in accidentally, is unknown. He was an Englishman, thirty years of age. – On Sunday a fatal accident happened at a deep part of the Water of Leith called “Hill’s Hole”, at the foot of Bowling Green Street. It appears that a fine girl, called Jean Lawson, 8 years of age, daughter of a widow residing in King Street, while playing with some companions on the banks of the river, fell in, and before she could be got out of the water life was quite extinct. – On Saturday evening, at 7 o’clock, a boy, about 9 years of age, named Peter Miller, residing in Burns’ Street, Leith, was amusing himself with some companions at the railway at Leith Sands, when his head was jammed or crushed between the two buffers of some trucks. He was conveyed to the Casualty Hospital, where he expired about 12 o’clock the same evening.
