IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get every James and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The HappyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

PERTH – SUDDEN DEATH – Died at Perth on Sabbath morning last, Walter Miller Esq., who had been for fifty years in the service of the Perth Banking Company. Mr Miller was sitting in the public reading room perusing the newspapers on Saturday evening when he suddenly fell from his seat upon the floor. Medical assistance was speedily procured and with proper attention, he so far recovered as to admit of his being carried down stairs in an arm-chair, and taken home in a noddy. During the night he rallied a little, and became quite sensible, but gradually got worse again, and died early on Sabbath morning. As stated above Mr Miller was, for the long period of fifty years, in the employment of the Perth Banking Company, by whose liberality he retired several years ago upon a handsome pension. Awarded in consideration of his long and faithful services. He was universally respected and well known at least by name, both in town and country, from the circumstance that, for many years, the notes of the Perth Bank were payable to “Walter Miller or bearer”. – Scotsman.

SUDDEN DEATH – Early in the morning of the 2d instant, James McCart, labourer in Pollockshaws, was found dead in his arm-chair, at the fire-side, a short time after the other members of his family had gone to bed. From the circumstances of no medical man having been called, and the body having been buried same day, the Procurator-Fiscal made inquiries into the case, and reported it to the Sheriff; but there is every reason to suppose that McCart died from natural causes, being rather an infirm old man, and subject to fits of severe coughing, by one of which caused perhaps, by over indulgence, on new year’s day, it is believed, he was carried off.

FATAL OCCURRENCE – On Friday afternoon, a man about forty-six years of age, named William Cream, tailor, parish of Colinton, was found dead by the side of the mill-lade in connection with Saughton Mills, Water of Leith, with his feet in the stream. He had quitted some companions about ten o’clock on the previous evening, with whom he had been drinking, and was on his way home, and it is conjectured that he had lain down on the road, and perished from the cold. SUPPOSED MURDER NEAR ABERDEEN – On Friday night last, Mr James Shanks, railway contractor, left Aberdeen with his horse and gig, for the purpose of proceeding to his residence at Kirkhill of Nigg. He was seen to pass the toll-bar at the Craiglug Suspension Bridge over the Dee in safety, but in the course of the night his horse reached the stable, totally stript of the harness, and soon afterwards the gig was found upset in a ditch at the side of the turnpike road, half a mile southward of the toll-bar. Mr Shanks’s hat and whip, also the horse harness, were found near the gig, but no trace of himself could be discovered until late on Saturday afternoon, when his body was found in the river Dee a little below the new railway bridge. From several circumstances that have transpired, it is believed that he must have been murdered. It was observed that there were no marks of any struggle near where the gig was found. It is hence supposed that the deceased has been attacked upon the road, and that the murderers had turned the gig into the ditch after they had stript the horse of his harness. – Scotsman.

The deceased was employed at the St Rollox Chemical Works.

SUDDEN DEATH AT KILMARNOCK – With much pain we have this week to record the sudden death of Mr Robert Wyllie, wright, which occurred through his inadventertly swallowing a fish bone. Mr Wyllie was in his usual health on Sabbath and attended church. He died on Tuesday morning last. He has been for many years a member of the Low Church session, and in him the poor have lost a zealous friend. His temper was rarely ruffled, and he was famous for his witty and quaint remarks. – Kilmarnock Journal.
