IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get every James and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The HappyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

It appears that she had been visited by a neighbour the previous evening, when she seemed in a very exhausted state from the effects of debauchery, and was literally a living skeleton. She was left in a bed at ten o’clock that night, and was found opposite the fire in the morning, whither she must have crawled in quest of heat, her house and person being destitute of every comfort, in consequence of her intemperate habits. She was legally separated from her husband, yet living in respectable circumstances, in consequence of her bad conduct, and ever since her house has been the haunt of the vicious and abandoned in the neighbourhood, and proved a perfect moral pestilence. She was in the receipt of a monthly allowance from the City Parish, which she generally spent with many other sums she could get possession of, in ministering to her depraved appetite.

DEATH OF SIR WILLIAM ALLAN, R.A. [abbreviated][02] – We regret to have to announce the death of Sir William Allan, one of the most distinguished artists which our country had produced, and President for a considerable number of years of the Royal Scottish Academy… took place at Edinburgh on Friday evening last… he was about 68 years of age…

NEW CUMNOCK – SUDDEN DEATH – About nine o’clock on the morning of Tuesday last, James Taylor, shepherd to Mr Russell of Carcow, was found dead on the hill, about a quarter of a mile from his own dwelling. It appears that he left the house in company with two of his assistance, and that they had not proceeded far till they separated. Shortly after one of the young men came upon his lifeless body, lying contiguous to a stell, out of which he had removed some sheep. Medical aid was procured, but proved unavailing – death having ensued without a struggle, there being no marks on the snow about him. It is supposed apoplexy must have been the cause of his death. He was a man up in years, and much respected in the neighbourhood – Ayr Observer.

MELANCHOLY OCCURRENCE – On Wednesday afternoon, about five o’clock, the neighbours of an old woman named Elizabeth Robertson or Macdonald, Castle Bank, were alarmed by the appearance of smoke issuing from her house. The door having been forced open, the unfortunate woman was found lying dead upon the floor, and scorched in a dreadful manner. Her face and arms had been burnt off and from the nature of her injuries, and the position in which the body was found, it is conjectured that the deceased had fallen into the fire. The floor was in a state of ignition, and a large hole has been burnt in it. The unfortunate woman was about 70 years of age, and was sober and steady in her habits. – Courant.

FATAL ACCIDENT [abbreviated] – On the morning of Friday the 15th instant, Robert Patrick Esq., son of Mr Robert Patrick, lately factor for Captain Blair, of Blair, was found dead in a coal pit, betwixt Ryesholm and Drakesmyre, in the vicinity of Dalry. The body when discovered was in a very mangled condition, in consequence of the fall… on the proceding day, deceased along with his brother and several others, had been engaged in some sports at Blair Park, in the moors stretching betwixt Dalry and Largs, and had partaken rather freely of liquor… he was last seen in life in Dalry, about twelve o’clock at night… it is supposed that he had wandered to the pit, mistaken his position and fallen in… he was about 38 years of age. – Kilmarnock Journal.
