IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get every James and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The HappyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

MELANCHOLY CASE OF DROWNING – On Sunday forenoon, a young man of the name of Francis carrel, a labourer, in taking a stroll round the Queen’s Drive, began to amuse himself by swimming his dog in Dunsapie Loch. It is conjectured that he had become benumbed by cold, or had been seized by cramp, for he soon afterwards sank. The alarm was raised, and after some delay, the body was found in a sitting posture, in a shallow part of the loch. Life was quite extinct, and great blame has been cast on some parties who are alleged to have witnessed the melancholy occurrence, and failed to render assistance. – Scotsman.

The poor girl endured the most intense pain till the 4th instant, when death terminated her sufferings. It is believed that the pin must have lodged in the head for nearly twenty years... she never recollected of having put one in her ear, but had a distinct remembrance of having when a child had a pin in her mouth, which she thought she had swallowed... – Scotsman.

FATAL AND DISTRESSING ACCIDENT AT PAISLEY [02] – A lamentable casualty occurred on Tuesday forenoon at Oakshaw Hill on the site of the Neilson Testimonial. The building of the foundation has, for some time past, been in progress. A large block of stone, between two and three tone weight, was being lowered to its seat. Mr Alexander Fraser, foreman of works, was standing on the block superintending operations, when one of the crane stays suddenly snapped at the base, and in an instant the crane itself fell with terrific force, struck him on the head, crushing his body between it and the mass of stone. All was the work of a moment – not a groan escaped him – death was instantaneous. The point of the stay which yielded was the iron spur where it catches the earth. This, it is said, bears evidence of having been formerly broken, though bolstered up in a seemingly sound but really most inefficient manner. Should this be the case, a very serious reflection rests upon the party who sold the implement in that condition. Where human life may be imperilled there should ever be jealous and rigorous inspection of all machinery, especially those of the crane structure. A widow and large family are bereaved by this mournful disaster. It must be very distressing to Mr Bowes, the contractor, that this fatal accident should have followed so closely the recent casualty at Ferguslie. <>. FATAL ACCIDENT [02] – An accident which, we are sorry to say, has proved fatal, occurred on Monday last, to a brick-layer, named Isaac Thomson. He was employed on a scaffolding erected at the windows of the fourth story of the new crescent now in the course of erection in Partick Road, where he accidentally overbalanced himself and fell to the ground; he was immediately removed to the Royal Infirmary, where he died the same day in consequence of the injuries he had received. He has left a widow, but we understand there is no family.

BRECHIN – A MISER’S STORE – On Saturday last, by the death of Alexander Dempster, flax-dresser, one of those anomalies in human nature - “a storing of wealth for another’s use” – was discovered here. The Brechin Miser was about 56 years of age; for about 20 years and up to within a few days of his death, he denied himself, even during the storms of winter, the luxury of fire and light. He was supplied with his daily food, which was of the scantiest and meanest description, by a neighbour, but he slept in his own house. After a few day’s illness, Dempster unexpectedly died on Saturday and in looking over his humble dwelling, there were discovered £125, 10s. In silver, £36 in gold and also nine £1 notes, which were stuck behind the window shutter. Besides the above, there has also been discovered bank checks amounting to about £1,000 and with other property, the old man is said to have been worth about £1,500. It were needless to say that Dempster denied himself many of the indispensible comforts of life. – Montrose Standard.
