IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get everyJames and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The happyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

The poor little fellow died almost immediately. The carrier, whose name is James McCombie, is said to have been loitering behind his cart at the time, thus having his horse unattended, and he was been apprehended.

MAN DROWNED – PAISLEY [02] – On Friday morning, about 8 o’clock, a man was found floating in the canal near Blackhall Bridge. His hat was got on the bank at the same place, and contained a letter addressed “Robert Hopkins, weaver, New Smithhills, Paisley”. The body was got out, but life was found completely extinct. The deceased was a widower, and we are sorry to add, that he had been drinking for about two weeks prior to the fatal morning on which he appears to have terminated his days in the most deliberate and determined manner.

THE CHOLERA AT SEA [03] -The Ship Sheridan, Captain Cornish, arrived at Quarantine from Liverpool. She lost thirty-one of her steerage passengers and seamen by cholera. The following are their names:-Mr Simmons, of New York, second officer of the ship; J Anderson, of Liverpool, carpenter of ditto; William Ogden, seaman of Liverpool; Frank Coaklin, ditto, of Rouen, France; Walter Riley, ditto, of Weathersfield, Connecticut; George Simmons, ditto, of Dantzic. Steerage passengers:-John Grimes, of Sligo; Frank Dalton and Ellen Dalton, of ditto; W. Hollyridge, and Martha Hollyridge, his wife (who have left four children on board the ship without relatives of friends); Mary Catherine, Sarah and Charles Barnes, of Craxton, England (all of the same family, and the mother is on board); John Mickleworth, of Leeds, England; Sarah Pratt, of Oxford, Ireland; John and Edward Richards, of Leeds, England; Catherine Doyle, or Ireland; Michael Breene, of Tipperary; James and Richard Smith, of Ireland; Martha Farrell, of Longford; William and Dorothea Oldman, of Cornwall, England; Sarah Lloyd and Morris Lloyd and Edward Lloyd (mother and two children) of Kidderminister, England; John Shannon, of Rosscommon, Ireland; (Joseph Kavanah, of Dublin, fell overboard and was drowned). Captain Cornish had a very serious and trying time the first week out. The cholera broke out among the crew on the 7 th of August, for the first eight days there were from eight to ten new cases, and from three to five deaths daily for eight days in succession. Out of 22 seamen, only four could be mustered in a watch. 80 cases and 31 deaths occurred since the ship sailed. All that could be done was done by Captain Cornish and his officers for the sick. Several were ill when she reached Staten Island; they were taken to the hospital. The vessel has been detained at Quarantine.

DALRY – FATAL ACCIDENTS – On Tuesday the 28th ultimo, three men, working in the Westyfauld pit, belonging to the Glengarnock iron Company, prevailed upon the assistant-engineer, in the absence of the engineman, whose duty it is, to let them down the shaft. Instead of descending, however, the cage began to ascend, and fearing he might be driven over the pit-head frame. One of the men leaped out, but failing in clearing the mouth of the pit, he fell in, and was precipitated to the bottom. He instantly expired. Deceased has left a widow and a small family to lament his sudden loss. The two men who were with him in the cage got out safely. On the following day, Wednesday, a young man named John Ferguson, while at work in the No.2 Langside Ironstone pit, belonging to the Messrs. Baird & Co., was killed by the falling in of the roof. He had unfortunately neglected to put in a wooden support in the morning, as advised by his fellow-workmen. He was a well behaved young man, and his melancholy death is much regretted. – Ayr Advertiser.

DISTRESSING EVENT – Another melancholy proof of the uncertainty of human life occurred in the parish of Lochbroom, on Friday the 24th ultimo. Dugald Macleay, an amiable youth, of about twenty years of age, son of Mr Donald Macleay, forester at Ridorach, went out on that morning to shoot some eagles that haunted the outskirts of the forest. After firing at an eagle, which he wounded, he is supposed to have either used the butt- end of his gun to dispatch her, or fell in the pursuit, for when his companion, who was hitherto concealed, had heard the second shot he walked up and found the excellent young man weltering in his blood and dead, the shot having penetrated the abdomen. The deceased was a young man of exemplary character and is justly regretted by all his acquaintances. – Inverness Courier.

The gun apparently had been lying in the boat fully charged, and a suitable occasion having occurred for its use, he was in the act of removing it, when, melancholy to relate, from some unaccountable circumstance, it went off, and the contents were lodged in the unfortunate young man’s head, death ensuing instantaneously. The feelings of the parents may be more easily conceived than described, when the mangles remains of their promising son were brought home, he having but a short time previously left them in all the buoyancy of sportive youth.

SMACK LOST, AND THE CREW DROWNED – A smack, belonging to Crossack Point, Kintyre (Argyllshire), with Hector McAllister and Duncan McAllister of that place, and Archibald McKellar, cattle dealer, Saltcoats, on board, left Crossack Point on Wednesday evening last, with a cargo of sheep, amounting to 50 or 60, belonging to the latter, destined for Saltcoats. On Friday, about noon, a smack was observed sailing off Ardrossan, the wind blowing a smart easterly breeze at the time; -when steering southward, at the distance of three quarters of a mile off, and while in the act of staying through a sudden gust of wind, she went down stern foremost. Unfortunately, those on board perished. McKellar and McAllister were unmarried. The former the principal support of an aged widowed mother. Hector McAllister was married, but we do not know if he had any family. The carcasses of 26 drowned sheep were cast ashore on Sunday last, betwixt Brodick and Lamlash, with Mr McKellar’s keel, but none of the bodies have yet been got, although trawling is going on off Ardrossan for the purpose. – Ayr Observer.
