FATAL CATASTROPHE – PROVIDENTIAL ESCAPE OF UPWARDS OF FIFTY LIVES [abbreviated] – A
melancholy catastrophe occurred at one of the coal pits belonging to the Dalmellington Iron Company, on
Tuesday evening last, by which two lives were lost... coal workings had become flooded when Silliehole Moss
had fallen in... This accident has caused a sensation over the minds of the inhabitants of the village which will
not easily be forgotten – more especially as one of the two men, named Joseph McCulloch, was not only a quiet,
industrious, and well-behaved person, but on account of his having left a wife and three children, under six
years of age, to mourn his loss. The other person, is a native of Ireland, named Rody, and lodged at Craigmark.
The duty of the deceased was to repair the roads when the colliers were absent, so that had the water broke in
about 12 o’clock noon, instead of the time it did, there would have been a sacrifice of more than fifty lives. -Ayr

FATAL ACCIDENT – At Holmes Colliery, in the parish of Galston, on Friday last, a young man of the name of
William Macnalty was killed while engaged in putting down a shaft there for the lease, Mr Horne.. Macnalty
and another man who was working along with him, were ascending the pit to avoid the explosion of a shot
which they had put into the rock in order to rend it, when the bucket came under the mid division of the pit, and
capsizing, Macnalty was precipitated to the bottom, a depth of 7 fathoms. He lived only a few seconds after the
fall. The other was enabled to retain his hold of the bucket rope, and so escaped unhurt. – Kilmarnock Journal.
DEATH OF A RECLUSE [abbreviated] – About mid-day on Tuesday, a shoemaker, of the name of George
Mushat, was found dead in his own house, in Wellington Street, Kilmarnock. On the Friday preceding, he was
seized with a fainting fit, in a neighbour’s house and fell into the fire... he was rescued and continued in his
usual health... Not making his wonted appearance next morning, the neighbours became anxious, and on going
to his door, they found it fastened... entered and found him in bed quite lifeless... apoplexy was the cause of his
death. Deceased was a man of retired habits, was unmarried and lived quite alone. He was miserly in disposition
– denying all but the bare necessaries of existence. On this account it was supposed that a rich hoard might be
concealed in his domicile. Search was made, but a few pounds and a bill of some considerable amount, was all
that could be found. – Kilmarnock Journal.

HIGH BLANTYRE, NOV. 23, 1849 [02] – A fatal accident occurred at High Blantyre on Thursday evening last,
to a little girl about six years of age, the daughter of James Monn, miner. Her elder sister and an infant had gone
to bed, and the little girl was attempting to light a lamp by the fire, when her apron accidentally caught the
flame, and her clothes were instantly in a blaze. Her cries attracted the notice of a young woman passing, who
on entering, found her enveloped in flames. She at first endeavoured to check the burning by pressing her close
to her own body, but this not succeeding, she threw a pailful of water on the sufferer, which had the desired
effect. On removing the clothing that was unburned, her whole body, with the exception of her back, was
deeply scorched. The poor child lingered on in excruciating agony till next day (Friday) as 12 o’clock, when she
expired.
