IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get everyJames and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The happyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

*** In our obituary of the 26th ultimo, there appeared the following announcement:-“Suddenly, at Neilston, on the 22d instant, Mr James M Gray, aged 20 years”. We learn that this announcement is a fabrication. The note which contained it is dated the 22d, and reached us on the 23d, bearing the Neilston post mark. It is distinctly written, in a female hand, upon a small black-bordered card paper. Our wont has almost invariably been to admit no notification of this kind, unless duly certified. We departed from the rule on this occasion, from the belief that the person named had died from the prevailing epidemic, and that the announcement had been sent off by female relatives, in the hurry of the moment, without being aware of the existence of the regulation which we ordinarily set upon. We can never depart from it again.

DROWNINGS OFF AYR – On Wednesday the 14th ultimo, the smack Rover, of about 10 tons burden, left Troon for Greenock, having on board three men and a boy. The day was exceedingly stormy, and when off Irvine she was seen by the crew of another boat to capsize and all hands met a watery grave. No assistance could be rendered them. Next day the oars and several empty boxes belonging to her were washed ashore in Irvine Bay. She left this about six weeks ago for the fishing ground off Ayr. The names of the persons who were thus unfortunately drowned are Gilbert Corkindale, William Mossett, Charles Chalmers, and Michael Trener, the latter belonging to Ayr, and the others to Greenock. Corkindale has left a wife and three children. – Greenock Advertiser.

BODY FOUND IN WATER [02] – About the 26th of January last, a number of printed bills were issued in Port Glasgow, and other places on the Clyde, regarding a young girl, named Helen McNish, who had gone amissing from Kelvin Haugh, near Glasgow. No trace of her was got, and it was supposed at the time that she must have fallen over a bridge on the Kelvin, near to the New City Road. This has proved to be the fact, as on Wednesday afternoon, the body of a respectably dressed female was discovered floating in the river, opposite the Wet Dicks of Port Glasgow, and when taken ashore, proved to be that of the young woman McNish. Notice being immediately sent to the friends, who reside in the Queen’s Arcade, Glasgow, by Mr McLean of the Port Glasgow Police, a sister of the deceased and another young lady arrived on Thursday morning and claimed the body. It is very remarkable that, although the girl has been about six weeks in the water, the body is not in the least disfigured.

WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH IN PAISLEY [abbreviated] – We have this week to record another instance of burning, now become of so frequent occurrence. INTERESTING FACT – A correspondent writing from Harris, on the 24th ultimo, informs us that on the previous day a sealed bottle was picked up on the shore of Stroud, containing a letter, in which was pencilled:“ Ship ‘Forest King’ 1000 tons register, sailed from Liverpool for New York on the 22d May, is now between George’s Bank and Sable Island, was detailed by fog at a latter place four days, and is now within 500 or 600 miles of New York, with upwards of 400 passengers, all tolerably well, but getting short of provisions. Only two children died since we left Liverpool. William Carson, late of Cavan, Ireland, surgeon on board.” The slip was dated “at sea, 26th June 1848” and addressed “To our illustrious countrymen, the Irish Pats.” The bottle contained another slip with the following:-“Alexander Thomson, surgeon, Co. Armagh, Ireland, formerly Saintfield, co. Down, off Sable Island, American coast. Two deaths on board out of 400.” An empty jar was found on the beach at the same place and time, which perhaps was thrown overboard. These facts confirm the theory that the ocean current setting northward along the American coast sweeps across from Newfoundland to the Hebrides, thence sweeps southwards, and finally returning to the West Indian Seas within the tropics. – Inverness Courier.

She had scarcely uttered the warning, however, when he missed his footing, and was precipitated over the bank... removed him to a cottage close by... after lingering till Friday morning, he died. Mr Hyslop was a man of buoyant spirits.....-Ayr Observer.
