LOSS OF LIFE AT SEA – The barque Rosalind of London, Captain Heweth, sailed from Troon, on Saturday
week, for Ceylon. She experienced heavy gales during the first three days, and on Thursday last, between six
and seven in the morning, with a tremendous cross-sea wind W.S.W., and about 100 miles west of Tory Island,
she was struck by a heavy sea, which carried away the long-boat, gig, cook-house, with the cooking utensils,
spare spars, and water-cask. The cook and a seaman, William Reind and O’Neil, who were going forward at the
time, were unfortunately killed between the ship’s rails and spars. To add to the melancholy catastrophe and
horror of the scene, two apprentices, named Thomas Mayer and Hugh Glasgow, were washed overboard, and
were never seen. So soon as the fatal gale moderated, the Captain ordered the vessel to be put round – the cargo
having shifted – and run for land. Captain Heweth brought the bodies of the deceased cook and seaman back to
Troon. They were, on Sunday, interred in the churchyard of Crosby – the funerals were attended by all the ship-
masters, with their crews, and the principal inhabitants of the port. Captain Heweth is reported to be much
depressed in spirits at the disastrous accident, but he has the consolation to find that his humane conduct is justly
and warmly appreciated by the whole community. – Kilmarnock Journal.

RENFREWSHIRE EMIGRATION – The amount of emigration this year from the large towns and villages, was
never surpassed, we believe, in proportion to the amount of population. This has been caused by the long
continuance of depressed trade; and by the partial employment, and low wages, which could only be obtained at
almost every description of handicraft. A large proportion of the emigrants were destitute of any means of their
own to fit them out for a voyage across the Atlantic, and they have had to reply for assistance in a great measure
upon their relatives that had gone before them to America. As a consequence of this state of things, a vast deal
of furniture of all descriptions has been thrown on the market at uncommonly low prices. The plenishing for
workmen’s houses in particular has literally had to be thrown away by those disposing of their effects at merely
nominal prices. New articles of furniture have never been less in demand, and in all the manufacturing
communities in this district, from the great metropolis of the west down to the smallest village, there has not for
the last twenty years been so great an amount of unlet houses. – Saturday Post.
FATAL ACCIDENT – About one o’clock on Tuesday afternoon, a fatal accident occurred in the establishment of
Mr Bruce, scale and beam maker, Physic Gardens, Edinburgh. While one of the workmen, named Robert
Galbraith, a middle-aged man, was engaged at a large grindstone, the stone suddenly split, and the unfortunate
individual was struck by one of the pieces on the chest, by which he was much bruised, and both his legs
broken. He was promptly conveyed to the Royal Infirmary, but he died before he reached that institution. We
regret to add that the deceased has left a wife and five children. – Courant.
FATAL ACCIDENT – On Tuesday, a child sixteen months old, named John Hunter, was killed on the road near
Newton Loan Toll, parish of Newbattle, by a cart going over its body. The case is we believe under judicial
investigation. – Courant.
DUNKELD – MELABCHOLY ACCIDENT – A child about two years old, son of Robert Cramb, near Kinloch,
was burned to death on Thursday last, under the following circumstances: -he had been playing with his sister,
two years older, near a rick of straw, which was set fire to accidentally, by the improper use of matches. The
child’s clothes were soon in flames, and before he was observed he was so much burned that death came to his
relief in a few hours. – Perth Courier.
MAN KILLED – INVERNESS [abbreviated] – Late on Friday evening last a very melancholy accident
occurred at the new foot-bridge now in course of erection here. To prevent the passage of people during the
unfinished state of the bridge, barricades have been erected at each end... About eleven o’clock, Alexander
Macrae, blacksmith, Abban Street, after conveying his brother a short distance along the Haugh, attempted to
cross the barricade and to get along the bridge on his way home... he seems to have lost his hold and fallen into
the channel of the river hitting his head on some large stones... it was found the skull and front bones of the face
were so frightfully fractured that little could be done, the sufferer rapidly sank, and died a quarter of an hour
after being conveyed to the Police station. He was a man of about 50 years of age, and has left a widow and
family. – Inverness Courier.
MELANCHOLY LOSS OF A BOAT WITH MOST OF HER CREW – A large fishing boat, which left Portessie
on Thursday week, for the fishing ground in the Moray Firth, was lost in the bay of Portsoy next day (Friday),
when six of her crew met a watery grave. They had got a large take of fish, and were running for Portsoy, at the
time of the accident, when a gust of wind suddenly capsized the boat, and she soon after sank, notwithstanding
all their efforts to right her. Two of the fishermen who were lost, namely John Murray and John Mackenzie,
have left widows and families, three and four children respectively. The other unfortunate individuals, who
perished, were Alexander Mackenzie, John Campbell, William Farquhar and William Laird. – Aberdeen Journal.

FATAL ACCIDENT [abbreviated] – About six o’clock on Tuesday morning, an accident occurred at the Howhill
Colliery, belonging to the Blair Company, Dalry, which has been attended by very lamentable consequences.... a
boy about fifteen years of age, was intrusted with opening and closing the mine hatches. On the morning of
Tuesday, three miners, Samuel McKerrell, Alexander Thomson and John Connolly were descending to their
work. They had nearly reached the bottom, when Stephen Hawthorn, a collier pushed along his basket of coals,
without noticing that the hatch was open and the consequence was, that it went down the shaft, dragging him
along with it. Hawthorn was killed instantly by the fall. Samuel McKerrell, one of the miners whom we
mentioned as descending in the cage, was struck on the head, and only survived a few minutes. Thomson, is not
expected to recover from his injuries. The only one of them who escaped unhurt was John Connolly, who,
hearing the noise of something falling down the pit, leaped from the cage, which was near the bottom, into one
of the doors of the mines. The circumstances attending this disaster will no doubt be inquired into by the
authorities, in order to ascertain in any culpable carelessness of any one has led to it. – Kilmarnock Journal.

the south bank, three expand the bed of the river, and six others are on the north bank... At the time the accident
occurred, about 5 o’clock in the afternoon, several workmen were employed in springing two of the arches at
the northern extremity of the bridge, a distance of about thirty yards from the embankment of the railway... the
pier supporting these two arches having suddenly given way, the two arches with the frame-work fell with a
tremendous crash, carrying in their descent a portion of the service bridge and the two heavy cranes which were
stationed as a short distance from each other, and used for lifting heavy stones from the quarry beneath... Several
labourers were engaged in the quarry at the time, and we regret to state that six were either killed on the spot, or

his friends still busy on the stream about four miles below the house, and proceeded homewards.... was seen
swimming across a pool with his rod in his hand and disappeared... – Inverness Courier.
DEMISE OF DAVID MCKEAN ESQ – In our obituary, we notice the decease of Mr David McKean, of the
firm of McKean and Lamont. We cannot allow the departure from this world of one of Glasgow’s most
esteemed citizens to pass so slightly unrecorded, as by the simple announcement that such an event occurred.
For the long period of half a century, Mr McKean moved among his fellow-citizens commanding respect from
all with whom he came in contact. His manners were unobtrusive – in business, he was among the first for
integrity – in public affairs he was active and clear minded, and in private life there are hundreds left behind him
who can testify to his sterling worth and genuine feeling. The good man’s best epitaph is in his deeds, and that is
now well written in the memory of Mr Kean’s fellow-citizens. – Daily Mail.
