IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get everyJames and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The happyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

DUMBARTON – FATAL OCCURRENCE – A melancholy circumstance took place here on Saturday night, by which two men, named Archibald Campbell and William Walker, lost their lives. They had gone out in a pleasure boat with the view, it is understood, of fishing. On the way home, one of them lost his balance while standing in the boat, and fell into the water, and his companion, in endeavouring to assist him, also unfortunately went over the side. Neither were able to regain the boat, and before aid could be rendered, both were drowned. The bodies were found about an hour and a half after the occurrence, but it was then too late for any means to prove successful in restoring life.

FATAL ACCIDENT [01] – On Friday morning, two gentlemen returning from Berwick in a gig, when near to the East Lodge of Hendersyde Park, betwixt two and three miles from Kelso, observed a cart upset, and the horse lying on the ground unable to rise, from the pressure of the cart upon it. On Examination, the body of a man was found underneath the cart quite dead, and with several severe bruises about the head and other parts of the body. His name was James Fairlie, coal carter from Donaldson’s Lodge. He left Kelso the night before, between ten and eleven o’clock, and it is supposed he had been asleep, and the horse had drawn to the road side to eat grass, in doing which one of the wheels had got upon the embankment at the side of the road, and upset the cart.

DEATH OF WALTER BROWN ESQ. [01] – Our obituary of today announces the death of one of the most respectable and oldest citizens of Edinburgh, which took place on Saturday morning last. Mr Brown was Lord provost of the city in 1828 and 1829, and during his civic rule, laid the foundation of what was to have been called the John Knox Church, and on which site the General Assembly Hall has since been erected. His unobtrusive habits and gentlemanly deportment won his the esteem and respect of all his fellow-citizens.

DEATH BY BURNING – On Tuesday morning a child eleven months old, named William Smith, son of a collier in Gilmerton, was severely burned and scalded by the fall of a grate upon the hearth stone, on which a pot of boiling soup was placed at the time. He was playing in front of the fire, immediately previous to the distressing occurrence, and the injuries he sustained were of so serious a nature, that he died at eleven o’clock the same evening. – Courant.

A DEATH SINGULARLY OCCASIONED – We mentioned in our last that a drunken fellow had rushed into the river a few nights before, to escape from the police, and that though he had succeeded in crossing, his cries when in the stream had caused a boat to be put off in his assistance. The boat was one of the cobbles which at night are drawn up on the banks of the river at wells Street, and it was manned by some young men who were passing, and he had been alarmed by the cries of the man in the water. It seems that one of the young men, named John Fraser, a saddler, aged 24, had over-exerted himself in the boat; his oar broke, but whether from this, or from having strained himself when jumping ashore, is uncertain. At all events, he was confirmed since the occurrence and died on Sunday morning last, after great suffering. He was unmarried. – Inverness Courier.

ACCIDENT AT BANKFOOT – A boy named James Gow, about three years, lost his life here on the afternoon of Monday last by one of the Dunkeld coaches. The little fellow had been behind a cart, and on running aside while the coach was passing fell before one of the wheels, which passed over the abdomen and crushed him to death on the spot. – Perth Courier.

ACCIDENT – On Sabbath morning, about five o’clock, a young man of the name of John Clark, an operative jeweller, fell down a stair in a house in Robertson Place, Kilmarnock, and was so much injured that he died a few minutes after. The stair is very awkwardly constructed, and several fatal accidents have taken place in a similar manner. The deceased was unmarried and about 26 years of age. – Ayr Observer.

FATAL ACCIDENT – On Friday last, a man named Thomas Cook, aged and infirm, near three score and ten year old, while walking on the middle of the street approaching the New Bridge, Ayr, was accidentally struck with a two-wheeled barrow loaded with wood, knocked to the ground and the wheel went over him. From the infirmity of age, the mishap told heavily upon him. Though immediately borne to the dwelling of his daughter in Wallace Street, and medical aid procured, he never rallied, and expired at an early hour next morning. To mark the regret of the young men who were in charge of the vehicle, it is to be mentioned that they defrayed the expenses of the funeral, and expressed their regret at the unforeseen casualty which caused the sudden loss of the old man. – Ayr Observer.
