IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get everyJames and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The happyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

BODY FOUND – On the 1st instant, the body of John Gordon, gardener, Pollockshaws, was found in the stable, at Cowglen. Gordon had been drinking to excess, and had been taken into the stable while in a state of helpless inebriety, and in about two hours afterwards was found dead. The case has been investigated by the authorities at Pollokshaws, and reported to the Sheriff.

MAN KILLED – An old man, named William Pewtherer, a mason, belonging to West Calder, who has been for some time past in a desponding state of mind, left his own house on Sunday, and it would seem that he had, from some cause or other, wandered upon the line of the Caledonian Railway, on which he was killed, on Monday, by an engine coming in contact with him near Lanark.

MAN DROWNED – On Wednesday evening, between seven and eight o’clock, the body of a man, attired in the garb of a seaman, was found on the canal at Port Dundas, opposite Gourlay’s distillery. He had not been above ten minutes in the water, yet when taken out life was extinct. It is not known how he fell into the canal. The body has been claimed by its relatives. Deceased was a man named Alexander Smith, master of the sloop Union of Banff.

MAN KILLED [01] – The large brick building in Lothian Road, in now in course of being removed, in order to afford more station accommodation for the Caledonian Railway Company, Friday afternoon, part of the roof fell upon a labourer, named Robert Young, who was employed in taking it down, and we regret to say that such were the injuries which he received that he died a few minutes adterwards. He has left a widow and three children totally unprovided for.

DROWNING [02] – On Tuesday forenoon, about eleven o’clock the body of Mr Thomas Brownlee, agent, was found floating in the Port Eglinton canal, which is in the immediate vicinity of his dwelling house. Deceased, it appears, had been missing from Monday afternoon at five o’clock, when he had left his family on some necessary business, and it is conjectured that in endeavouring to find his way home he had stumbled, and fell into the canal.

ACCIDENT AT THE BROOMIELAW [02] – On Tuesday morning, about half past one o’clock, a workman named John Norval Barr, accidentally missed his footing while stepping into the steamer Plover, and fell into the river. Before assistance could be rendered him, the unfortunate man was drowned. Some time after the casualty, the body of the deceased was got out of the water and conveyed to the Clyde Police Office.

FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT – On Saturday last a young man, about 19 years of age, named David Beggs, an apprentice engineer on the Nithsdale Railway, went down from Dumfries to Gretna for pleasure; in returning by the evening train he was sitting upon the tender, and it is supposed had overbalanced himself and fallen upon the line. The engine-driver missed him and reported this to the station master at Dumfries on the arrival of the train here; an engine with lights was immediately despatched in search, and the body was found lying on the line betwixt Mousewald and Ruthwell. His skull had been fractured, apparently by the fall, and the left arm shattered in consequence of the carriage wheels having passed over it. – Dumfries Courier.

FATAL ACCIDENT ON ICE [ABBREVIATED][02] – Yesterday afternoon, about 4 o’clock, an accident happened in the Clyde, by which a young woman lost her life. It appears that she had gone on the ice at the bend of the river, near Peat Bog, when a young man followed, and took her round the waist in diversion. They both immediately went down in about 16 feet of water. A youth who was close to the pair went down also. Two young men, who were at hand, rushed forward to give assistance, but the ice giving way under them, they shares the same fate... a latter was brought and the men were saved but the girl drowned. The deceased was named Margaret Arthur, about 18 years of age, and servant with a respectable family in Sauchiehall Road. The body was recovered in about an hour, and removed by the relations, who live in Bell Street, Calton... this is the first accident which has occurred on the ice, between Hutchesons’ and Rutherglen Bridge, for eight years past.
