middle of last week, with the intention of proceeding to Thornhill in search of employment. He slept on the road
when passing St Mary’s Loch. The weather was wild and wet in the lowlands, and would, no doubt, be still
more severe among the hills. He managed, however, to reach the valley of Moffat water, and was sheltered in a
shepherd’s house at Carifrane, on the farm of Mr Johnstone, Caplegill. Mr Johnstone, when informed of the
circumstance, humanely sent to Moffat for medical aid; when this arrived, however, the poor fellow was beyond
the healing art – he died early on Sunday morning. The medical man pronounced the case to be one of cholera,
brought on by exposure to wet and cold. The body was brought to Moffat, and interred there, on Sunday
afternoon. – Dumfries Courier.

calamity of the floods, which have so materially damaged the Lovat estates, Mr Smith exerted himself

supervened, and on Sunday morning Mr Smith died, at his residence, Wellhouse... – Inverness Courier.

from the house of a widow of the name of Elizabeth McDonald or Elizabeth Swanston, resinding in the

upon a chair with her clothes in flames. She was immediately removed to the Infirmary, where she died on
Friday morning from the injuries she received. On Friday afternoon, about five o’clock, a similar occurrence,
with the same lamentable result, took place in a house in the Killie Brae, West Port, from which an unpleasant
smell of combustion having issued from the window, the door was forced open, and the occupant of the room,
Mrs Hannah Reid, also a widow, was found lying upon the floor, near the fire place, with her clothes burned to
cinders, and herself quite dead. It is supposed that in both cases the unfortunate woman had been the worse of
liquor. – Courant.
TWO BOATMEN FOUND DEAD IN A BOAT NEAR FORT-WILLIAM [abbreviated] – On the evening of
Monday, the 29th January, Angus Cameron and Ewan Cameron, brothers, residing in Fort William, were
employed by Mr Whatmore, sheriff-officer, to row him and his wife across the Linabe Loch from Fort William
to Corpach, a distance of two miles....the boat reached Corpach... the party remained at Corpach until nine, and
while there partook rather freely of whisky, the Camerons having drank five or six glasses a piece... the night
was dark and very cold... it seems that they had not pulled far from the Corpach shore, on the return home with
Mr and Mrs Whatmore, when the Camerons quarrelled about the boat’s course, there was some confusion, and
at length the boat went aground on a bank. Being ebb-tide, the Camerons were unable to get the boat afloat,
although they jumped into the water up to the middle... eventually the tide rose, and they made it to the ferry-
house, where the Whatmore’s left... the Camerons departed again... the boat was found submerged with the
Camerons on board dead... – Inverness Courier.
