IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get everyJames and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The happyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

DEATH BY DROWNING [02] – On the afternoon of Saturday last, a man named John McNicol was found drowned in the river, at the south side of the harbour. McNicol, it appears, had been engaged the previous evening as a private watchman in the brig Lady Cornwall of Greenock, and as he was nowhere to be found in the morning when the crew came to the vessel, it was supposed that he must have fallen into the river. Search was accordingly made, when his body was found, as above stated, betwixt the vessel and the quay. McNicol was formerly a watchman in connection with the Clyde Police, and was always much respected.

FATAL ACCIDENT – One of those distressing accidents, attended with fatal results, which are so frequent in collieries, even when the greatest caution is employed, occurred on Tuesday night, about eleven o’clock, in No.1 pit of the Portland Iron Company, at Crookedholm. The seam of coal now working in this pit is about 11 feet thick, and the incumbent stone forming the roof, being but thin, a portion of it gave way, and falling on the head of John Riley, one of the colliers, killed him instantaneously. Within a few hours of the time he had left his home in Newton, of this town, to engage in work, he was borne back by his sorrowing fellow-workmen a lifeless corpse. The painful situation of his wife at this result may be easily conceived. Riley is a native of England, about 30 years of age. His family consisted of his wife and two children, of whom the youngest is only a few weeks old. – Kilmarnock Journal.

MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT – THREE MEN DROWNED [abbreviated] – Another of those melancholy disasters at sea, which are so frequent on our northern shores, has occurred, by which three men have been drowned. On Thursday last, a small boat from Strathy, with a crew of five men, was returning from Thurso with some winter provisions for their families, and had reached Sandside harbour in course of the afternoon, where they staid for a little to take some refreshment. By the time they left, the wind had increased... the boat went down under a press of sail, and the whole crew was immersed... A boat from the harbour succeeded in saving two of the men, viz., George Mackay, a married man, and Angus Mackay, also a married man. John Mackay, a married man, was drowned, also John Mackay and Robert Mackay, two single men. – John o’Groat Journal.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT WOODHEAD LEAD-MINES – A miner named John Bone, lost his life at these mines on Monday last. It appears that as he was excavating, a stone, upwards of four feet in length, was suddenly detached and fell upon him, mortally crushing him beneath its heavy weight. He was speedily extricated, and proper remedies applied, but he only survived the melancholy accident half an hour. A widow, two sons, and a daughter, lament his hapless fate. – Ayr Observer.

MELANCHOLY EVENT – On Friday evening, the 21st instant, Mr Robert McMillan, Palgown, on his way home from Newton-Stewart market, fell from his horse near to the Boreland. Mr McWhae of Larg, who came up immediately after, found him lying on the road quite insensible. He instantly rode for a doctor, who was in attendance in a few minutes. Mr McMillan was carried into Mr McGill’s or Boreland. Dr. Erskine remained with him all night, but all efforts to restore him were unavailing. He continued apparently quite unconscious all the while, and expired at 1 o’clock on Saturday afternoon. Whether the pony shyed or came down with him, or how he lost his seat, cannot be known, as he was alone at the time of the accident. The deceased was an excellent young man, and highly respected by all who were acquainted with him; he had lately leased the farm of Cuil(?), to which he was to enter at Whitsunday next. – Dumfries Courier.
