IMPORTANT NOTES

The following newspaper notices have been copied by hand from physical newspapers and microfilms. We hope the human involvement in all transcriptions has increased accuracy, compared with character recognition software often used.

All care was taken to ensure accuracy, but occasionally it isn’t possible to read the information, due to the quality of the surviving documents. When a best guess was made, this is indicated with a question mark in brackets (?). When one or more characters could not be identified, they are replaced with ‘#’. We cannot be held responsible for errors made as the transcriptions. These were made to the best of our ability.

The lists below are in order in which they were published in their respective newspapers. They may not be in strict chronological order. You can either read through the monthly listings, or you can use the search facility at the top-left corner of this page. TIP: If you are looking for, let’s say James Smith, by typing in that name you will get everyJames and every Smith listed in the HappyHaggis website, which might not be too useful. If you use speech marks ”James Smith” you will only get the full name coming up. You can just search for a surname or even a street name if you wish. The happyHaggis website if fully searchable.

HOW TO USE THESE LISTINGS:

Paragraph headings are listed with codes, which represent the newspaper source:
[01] The Scotsman
[02] Glasgow Herald
[03] The New York Times
[04] The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Advertiser ( The Paisley Herald & Renfrewshire Gazette for listings from 20th May 1854)
[05] Glasgow Saturday Post &Paisley and Renfrewshire Reformer
Other publications are listed individually.

  • Sometimes notices were sent to various newspapers, or repeated by other newspapers, so duplications may occur.
  • Names have been expanded from their abbreviated form to full form to assist in name searches.
  • The abbreviation “Jno” has been left as such, as this could represent either John or Jonathan.
  • Listings which include an initial, such as Jack B Nimble won't appear when searching for Jack Nimble, so it might be worthwhile to also check surnames only.
  • Notices from overseas sometimes took 6 months or more to arrive in Great Britain. If checking for an overseas listing, it may be worthwhile checking the following year as well.
  • The spelling of names can change over the years. For example, It was common to have Catharine unlike today's popular Catherine, and modern day Todd was more commonly spelt Tod, Kerr was spelt Ker etc.

Births – these notices rarely gave the name of the mother or child. The address and father's name will be listed, unless the mother was single/widowed.

Marriages – These have the place of the marriage, the bride and groom’s names, the bride’s father’s name and occupation, and often a clue as to other siblings of the same gender.

Deaths – These often mention the address of death, the spouse’s name, or the parent’s name/s in the case of a child death.

HAPPY SEARCHING! We hope you find what you're looking for.

MELANCHOLY LOSS OF LIFE – We copy the following heart-rendering recital from the Ballina Chronicle of Wednesday last:-“ Charles Atkinson Esq., coroner, held an inquest on Monday last, at Coolcronan, on the bodies of six individuals, named James healy, Thady Hoban, James O’Hara, Francis Kean, Winny Monnelly and Biddy Dempsey. From the evidence adduced it appeared that on last Sunday evening, they were in the act of crossing the Moy, near Benafinglass, in a small flat-bottomed boat, used as a ferry boat, with merely a short pole and a piece of board to propel it. On launching out, the water was pouring in at the one end of the boat, and the party ran to the opposite end, which immediately caused the boat to sink. The entire party, consisting of the individuals already named, were precipitated into the water, which was about 14 feet deep, and perished in a group, within a few yards of the bank. The Moy is not more than about 25 yards wide at the place where the accident occurred”.

FATAL ACCIDENT – A WOMAN BURNED TO DEATH [abbreviated] – On Monday evening about five o’clock, an alarm of fire was raised in Little York Street, Belfast, and, shortly after, one of the town engines arrived at a house in that locality, where it was said the flames had broken out... the alarm originated in the fact of an old woman having accidentally allowed her clothes to catch fire... she died in the course of an hour... Her name was Isabella Carr, she was upwards of seventy years of age, and had been for some time doting... – Belfast News letter.

FATAL ACCIDENT [02] – On Wednesday afternoon, shortly before five o’clock, a casualty of a very simple nature occurred in a lane off High Street, by which, we regret to say, a man named James Bradie, who resided in Anderston, unfortunately lost his life. The deceased was employed as a labourer with Mr Brown, builder, and at one time mentioned, was engaged in assisting one of his master’s carters up the said lane, which is very steep, with a cart of stones. The back-board of the cart having been taken out at the foot of the lane and some stones to ease the horse, and while deceased was pushing behind with his head downward, a stone fell on him and fractured his skull, killing him on the spot. The unfortunate man has left a widow to deplore his loss, but we have not learned if he had any family.

BODY FOUND [02] – On Saturday morning, a man, named Edward McNeil, was found lying dead in a stable in Rutherglen Road. There were no marks of violence on the body, and as he was subject to fits, it is conjectured that he had been seized, and there being no help at hand, had been suffocated. Deceased was in the habit of sleeping in the stables, for he was in such a destitute condition that he was unable to get better accommodation.

DEATH OF THE EARL OF AIRLIE [abbreviated] – It is with regret that we announce the death of this universally esteemed nobleman, at his residence in London on the afternoon of Monday. His Lordship was in the 64th year, having been born on the 16th December 1785(?)... The deceased Peer succeeded his father, Walter, in 1819, and in 1826 was confirmed by Act of Parliament in the titles (which had been attained in 1716, and 1746, but under circumstances which left doubt as to the validity of the attainder) of earl of Airlie and Lord Ogilvy of Airlie, Alyth, and Lintrathen. The baronage of the family (which traces its descent from the old Celtic Earls of Angus, and is the chief of the name of Ogilvy) dated from the end of the fifteenth century, the Earldom was bestowed by King Charles I... The late Earl married in 1812 Miss Clementina Drummond, daughter of the late Gavin Drummond Esq., and by this lady his Lordship had issue David Graham Drummond, Lord Ogilvy (now Earl of Airlie), born in 1826, and four daughters. Her Ladyship died in 1835, and in 1843 Lord Airlie married Miss Bruce of Cowden, who died in 1845. His Lordship was one of the sixteen representative Peers of Scotland. – Courant.
