MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT – On Friday week, between seven and eight o’clock evening, as Mr James
Wilson, farmer, Muttonhole, near Balthayock, was proceeding homewards from Perth, in company with his
wife, along the hill road to Glencarse, the horse and loaded cart which he had in charge, owing to the darkness
of the night, went into a ploughed field opposite the Binn farm-house, and as Mr Wilson was in the act of
turning the horse, the cart upset and overthrew the horse, which, falling upon its driver, the unfortunate man was
crushed to death before the screams of his wife could summon the nearest residents to his assistance. – Perth
Advertiser.
DEATH OF DR. TORBET [abbreviated] -... the demise of William Torbet, surgeon... at the period of his death
he was in the prime of manhood... workload which served to bring on the disease which ended in death. His
brother John was cut off by the same malady about twelve years ago... fever was the cause of his death. The
mortality amongst medical men has been in Paisley unusually severe for a number of years. Of twenty-four
members of the faculty who were alive in 1818, only four now survive. – Ibid.

SUDDEN DEATH [01] – On Thursday afternoon, John Watson, aged 55, who took charge of the sticks,
umbrellas, &c., left by the visitors to the Exhibition of Paintings, fell down at the door of the Institution, in a fit
of apoplexy. He was immediately carried home and only survived two or three hours.

DEATH OF MAJOR-GENERAL FORBES, C.B. [abbreviated] [02]– We have to record the death of this officer,
who expired on the 29th ultimo, at his residence in Aberdeen.... for many years connected with the 78th Regiment
of Highlanders, a distinguished corps, locally known as the Ross-shire Buffs... [details of long and details
military record follows]... Naval and Military Gazette.
DEATH OF WILLIAM INGRAM OF ABERDEENSHIRE POST [abbreviated][02] -The Aberdeen Journal
mentions the demise, on the 19th ultimo, of William Ingram, author of a small volume of poems, published in
that city in 1812. Mr Ingram was in his 84th year when he died.. His last instructions were brief and simple –
“Bury me as near old Mr Falconer as possible, and send ‘the bookie to Lord Aberdeen’”. “Old Mr Falconer”
was a former clergyman in the parish of Fyvie... and “the bookie” (a copy of this little volume” was the only
token that he had to bestow of his gratitude to the noble and generous benefactor on whose property he resided
at Woodhead of Fyvie, and who rescued him from the absolute want that overtook his declining years.

MELANCHOLY OCCURRENCE [abbreviated] – About four o’clock on Monday afternoon, William Gall and
James Sivewright, fishermen belonging to Broughty Ferry, left Dundee harbour in their boat (a yaul), in order to
return home, after disposing of their fish.... the wind was a little squally...the boat with the two unfortunate men
must have been swamped and gone immediately down, as neither the boat nor the bodies have as yet been
found. They were both married, and have left families to deplore their loss. – Dundee Courier.

BLAIRGOWRIE – FATAL ACCIDENT – On Wednesday last week, John Lochraine, who for several years has
been a resident in Croftlane, met his death by falling down a stair in Brown Street. The fall was heard by several
people on the street, who lifted up the unfortunate man and found the blood issuing from his nose. He lived until
next day, but never spoke after the accident. The deceased was much addicted to drinking, and had been in
liquor when the fatal occurrence took place. He has left a widow but no family. – Perth Courier.

FATAL ACCIDENT [abbreviated] – A melancholy accident, attended with loss of life, occurred at Content
Quarry on Tuesday last.... a man named John Reverty or John Reverton... a portion of clay weighing about six
hundred weight, fell on his and buried him... he was heard to exclaim “Oh men, I’m sair hurt”... He was
promptly taken to the foreman’s office, but life was nearly extinct. It is supposed he is a native of Ireland, and is
an utter stranger in this place, having only joined the work at the quarry on Friday last. – Ayr Advertiser.
BODY FOUND [01] – On Thursday morning, the body of a woman was found by two men, floating in the
Canal basin, Port Hopetoun. On examination it was found to be the body of an inmate of the City Charity
Workhouse. The deceased, whose name was Helen Clark, was about thirty-six years of age, and was addicted to
intemperance.
FATAL ACCIDENT [abbreviated] – On Saturday night, about 8 o’clock, while several youths were playing at
cricket in a field near Kinning Place, and close to the Mineral Terminus Railway, a train of wagons loaded with
pig iron, drawn by a horse, was coming towards the harbour, when some of this youths left their sport and
commenced to push forward the train. One of them named James Brown... missed his footing and fell before the
wheels which passed over his body... we understand that his remains were yesterday removed to Campsie, his
native place.

FATAL ACCIDENT [01] - Clementina Dodds, aged about 14 years, daughter of James Dodds, labourer,
Penicuick, while engaged working in one of the paper mills in that place, belonging to Mr Cowan, her clothes
accidentally became entangled amongst the machinery, and she was so dreadfully mutilated before the
machinery could be stopped, that death was the result.

MELANCHOLY OCCURRENCE AT SALEN, ISLAND OF MULL [abbreviated][02] – On the morning of the
23d current, after breakfasting, four young lads belonging to this village set out in a boat to some small islands
in the sound between Mull and Morven to bring home some seaweed for manure... they had incautiously
overloaded the boat... about a mile and a half from the shore, the boat swamped and capsized... Mr McIntyre,
merchant in the village, instantly manned his boat and saved two lives, even the third showed some signs of life
when taken out of the water, but these soon disappeared... The names of the two drowned are John McInnes and
Hugh McGilvray, well-doing young men, who were the principal support of their poor aged parents...
BOY KILLED [01] – Andrew Clark, thirteen years of age, son of Thomas Clark, baker, West Calder, was killed
on Monday morning, near Longford Colliery, under the following circumstances. It appears that when near said
colliery, and as coals were scarce, he passed a neighbour’s cart at a quick rate to be at the hill first, but on taking
a sharp turn of the road, one of the wheels went over some rubbish by which the cart was overturned, and he
received a severe blow from the edge of the cart, which caused death in twenty minutes after the occurrence.
